Biblical Higher Education - In Your Own Words …
What are you and your colleagues writing and saying about biblical higher education’s distinctive nature and calling? Send me what you are saying to your students and your stakeholders. Here’s an example from Philadelphia Biblical University President, Todd Williams:
We live in a day that is in need of [biblical higher education]. I believe we have been given a once-in-a-generation opportunity. Ours is a day marked by cynicism and apathy and indifference. We are awash in ambiguity and adrift in a sea of doubt. There is a lack of substance, a lack of intentionality, and a loss of seriousness of purpose. Ours is a day, then, in need of clarity, of truth, of coherence, of conviction, of gravitas. I believe that [biblical higher education] is uniquely positioned, both philosophically and practically, to stand in this day and make that kind of a difference. The importance of truth seeking, truth knowing, and truth living cannot be underestimated. There must be some standard to which we can appeal as human beings, some marker by which we travel, some reference point by which we orient ourselves. Otherwise, we delude ourselves. John Henry Newman, over 150 years ago in his work, The Idea of a University, offered this wisdom. He said, “Knowledge is one thing, virtue another. Good sense is not conscience, refinement is not humility, nor is largeness and justice of view faith.” Ours is a day in need of understanding.
We have before us a once-in-a-generation opportunity, a convergence of opportunity and potential. The questions I ask myself are simply this: Will we honor God and our heritage and our legacy and expend the effort to take full advantage? Will we embrace our stewardship obligations and further the work here? Will we proceed with humility and diligence and compassion, with clarity of purpose and sincerity of conviction? Will we continue this journey with courage and wisdom and discipline? Will we rest upon the words of Isaiah 55 acknowledging that God’s ways are not man’s ways and that His Word watereth the earth and does not return void? And will we live and work in light of Romans 12 and submit to the truth that all we are and all we have is not our own but is His and should be used in obedient service to Him who needs no counsel and owes no debt? My answer is this: We will, by God’s grace.
